Metal Garage Doors and the Best Method of Construction

Which Metal Garage Door is the Best?

When it is time to buy a garage door, you will realize that you have different options available to you. Like so many other products, not all of them live up to industry standards. Buyers sometimes choose the wrong type for their needs due to lack of information. Let’s look at the different types of construction methods to determine which one will suit your needs best.

Garage Door Insulation

How important is garage door insulation? The answer depends mostly on the area in which you live, but there is ample evidence that this is a money saver. This adds another layer of home insulation, helping to lower heating and cooling costs. It is possible to add insulation to a garage door that lacks it, but it is more cost effective to purchase one with insulated panels built in.

Manufacturers use two types of insulation in garage doors: polyurethane and polystyrene. Polyurethane is a better insulation product, but polystyrene is still widely used.  The latter has become less appealing due to the popularity of green homes. It is considered less environmentally friendly than polyurethane. Another advantage of polyurethane is that it has the highest R-value.

Understanding Layers

The best types of garage doors for most homes are those made with 3 layers. This means two outer steel sheets with insulation in between. These doors range in thickness, going up as high as two inches. Non-insulated doors can also be two inches thick. With these types the panels are just single metal sheets, making them one layer. Two layer construction involves the addition of an insulation panel with a backing to act as a fire safety measure.

Important Considerations

After the layers and insulation are out of the way, you can look at other factors to decide which type of construction you prefer. If you want some amount of soundproofing, then the insulated door is the best option. Polyurethane is more effective for this purpose if you want less outdoor noise when you are inside the garage. Of course, you will want a strong door, not just in the event of a minor collision, but also to protect your home against hurricane winds. A three layer insulated door is the strongest type you can buy, especially if it contains polyurethane foam insulation.

If you tend to leave your garage open for long periods, you should buy a durable door. This might be tougher on your budget but you will face lower costs over time. If you are still unsure, talk to a garage door technician about the factors that make one garage door more suitable for your needs than another type.
